Letter: Don’t open borders

It’s difficult to determine if Elias Smith, in his recent letter, actually advocates anarchy. His arguments are easy to challenge. The United States, unique among nations, was founded to secure and protect the natural rights of its citizens. Despite a century of progressive social engineering, it still does a fair job of it. Human nature has been constant throughout history. The strong always prey upon the weak. Borders, the rule of law and a strong military are essential to preserve our way of life. Blaming our foreign policy for the chaos in other lands is absolutely ludicrous.

“Empire” and “rulers” are the opposite of what the United States stands for. Is the U.S. perfect? No. But opening the borders to uncontrolled immigration would mean the end of the most reasonable country the world has ever known: government of the people, by the people and for the people. Perhaps it is Mr. Smith who is ignorant of history.
