Letters to the Editor

Letter: Wonderful news

The Legislature has passed a bill with a veto-proof margin that gives the state a capital budget and accomplishes the normal reverse sweep process. This resolves two of the “four spears” threatening Alaska’s future that were identified by House Speaker Bryce Edgmon.

If legislators can do that, maybe they can find a way to prevent the governor from vetoing their solution to his $444 million cuts, and his insistence on an unaffordable $3,000 dividend. Better yet, they could protect the dividend from political maneuvering by making it a percentage of Alaska’s percent-of-market-value (POMV) endowment fund. That way, people would be assured that they will receive a dividend each year and the amount would grow as the Permanent Fund grows.

The governor himself has said that the dividend is “something incredibly valuable and unique about Alaska.” Now his actions need to ring true to his words.
