Letters to the Editor

Letter: Have we no shame?

Just when I thought that our state financial crisis couldn’t get any worse, I opened my paper a couple of days ago and saw a small Associated Press blurb reporting that our fine governor has hired a expert in oil tax matters to fight against the Legislature in their efforts to review and reform Alaska’s oil tax structure.

It appears that our elected representatives in the Alaska Legislature want to start renegotiations with the oil companies in our behalf, but the governor is now going to spend government money to argue for the oil companies against the Legislature. Is the governor working for us or for the oil companies? If you don’t see something horribly wrong in this, then God help us.

Then I opened my computer’s national news app and there, staring me in the face, was another news item now reporting to the whole world that our governor and the Republican representatives following his lead had failed to allow the disbursement of approved scholarship money to thousands of college students who worked hard to qualify for and receive these scholarships.

I am embarrassed beyond belief. I thought Alaskans were smarter than to let this happen. Have we no shame?
