Letter: Cardboard box needed

Help save the Pioneer Home veterans from bankrupcy and home in a cardboard box.

My rent letter from Clinton Lasey, director of Alaska’s Pioneer Homes, was received today, Aug. 3. In this letter, he told me that as of Sept. 1, my rent payment is increasing from $2,588 per month to $3,623 per month. This is a $1,035 increase and one I’m not sure I can afford. My wife, who has Alzheimer’s disease, is a veteran, and also living in the home. She is 80 and I am 83. I have not heard what the increased cost of her care will be.

There’s supposed to be a bill, House Bill 96, that will prevent this huge, unbearable increase from happening. Politicians are too busy arguing over the amount of the Permanent Fund dividend, and not concerned over this huge increase forced on veterans who have served their country. Needed: One large cardboard box to house my wife and I.
