Letter: Responsible gun control steps

I am a responsible gun owner, as are the vast majority of gun owners. However, as demonstrated recently in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton, some of our fellow citizens should not have access to weapons. It is time for three actions to stop the slaughter of innocent people.

First, stop the sale of all military-style automatic weapons like AK-47s and AR-15s, as well as high-capacity magazines. These items are designed to efficiently kill people during war and have no other legitimate use.

Second, we must have consistent and extensive background checks and waiting periods for the purchase of all guns in all states.

Third, none of our Congress members should accept any support, of any kind, from the National Rifle Association, as this implies inappropriate gun lobby influence.

The implementation of these three things won’t eliminate hate-filled psychopaths from our society, but it would severely limit their access to weapons.
