This week kicks off a national celebration of direct support professionals, an opportunity to honor thousands of unsung heroes in our communities — dedicated women and men who chose to support a child, adolescent, adult or elder with differing abilities to be included in their communities of choice.

In my career I have witnessed the deepest demonstration of commitment from those who have dedicated their professional lives to walk alongside others; teaching, coaching, supporting and shining the light of possibility and opportunity so others can experience all that life has to offer.

I am deeply grateful to those choosing a career that rarely brings fame or a rock star salary but is critical for the well-being of so many. Our community is enriched by the daily moments of perseverance direct support professionals display. I encourage everyone who knows a direct support professional to take a moment this week to offer profound appreciation for the work done every day to enhance the lives of others.
