Letters to the Editor

Letter: Put America first

The allegations about the conduct of the President, members of his staff and other administration officials with regard to Ukraine and the upcoming election are very serious. If true, whether or not there was a quid pro quo, these acts are a threat to the very basis of our democracy, free and fair elections.

The allegation that the President offered Ukraine help from Attorney General William Barr and the Justice Department is mind-boggling. The possibility that transcripts of discussions on this and other topics have been sequestered in a highly secure site and not shared with the proper individuals suggests that the President’s staff is colluding to hide his heinous, illegal activity.

All of these allegations, unfortunately, are believable. The contents of the Mueller report, which I have read, clearly show the President and his administration’s lack of concern for the integrity of our election system, the Justice Department and the rule of law.

Our senators took this oath of office: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Are the members of the Senate prepared to put the Constitution and country first, as this oath requires? Does the Senate still believe in the Constitution? Will the Senate protect the rule of law, separation of powers and the role of Congressional oversight? I would like our senators to show us that we still live in the democracy to which they swore or affirmed their allegiance.
