Letter: Bad labor law

With regard to Shawn Huber’s death and Hilcorp’s resulting unsafe workplace fine, North Slope operators historically were responsible for their proportionate percentage share of losses, including reimbursement of workers’ compensation benefits, a much greater deterrent of unsafe work practices than nominal fines.

In 2004, this changed as a result of legislation sponsored by the industry and Ralph Seekins, which immunized project owners from liability for injuries and death. Beyond Shawn Huber’s tragic death, his family members are also victims of this unfair law.
