Letters to the Editor

Letter: Climate progress

I really appreciate that the ADN published the article from Bloomberg News, “U.S. to negotiate carbon trades under climate pact shunned by Trump.”

For one, I was encouraged to read that there are those representing the U.S. who are not stopping negotiations with global partners regarding ways to reduce our carbon footprint and to mitigate the causes of human-caused climate disasters. I was encouraged to see that although “Oil and gas companies unsuccessfully lobbied the Trump administration,” “(they) have a vested interest in the negotiations.”

For another, I was encouraged that there is an entity, the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, of which the U.S. remains involved and supports its plan to “offset plane pollution by planting trees, investing in clean energy and taking steps to curb emissions.”

As we are seeing some of the worst impacts of the climate crisis and seeing how we as Alaskans depend so heavily on air transportation, this is encouraging. From pollution due to the toxic chemicals used at airports, to the carbon footprint we each produce every time we travel, and given the fact that a good part of our economy in Anchorage is based on air travel, I would like to hear more about all this.

I did go to the website for the ICAO, but it was of little use to me as a lay person. I did see their environmental plan guidelines, but no action plan reports. I say we invite the ICAO to have a national conference here in Anchorage soon to highlight this area of their work!
