Letter: Sullivan doesn’t represent Alaskans

Alaska is not a Republican state and the Republicans know it. If we Alaskans can have one of those historic voter turnouts and we are true to our independent nature, we won’t re-elect Sen. Dan Sullivan in 2020 and we can elect someone who knows Alaska values.

If you have been following his track record in the Senate, you know that he listens to Washington, D.C., think tanks more than his constituency. Only a mere 25% of Alaskans are registered Republican; the vast majority of Alaskans are registered as nonpartisan or undeclared. A total of 60% of all registered voters in Alaska are not affiliated with the two major parties.

In 2018, Rep. Don Young just needed to garner 20% of the undeclared and nonpartisan voters. Alaska Republicans have a low bar to getting elected — they merely need to campaign to their party base, because history has shown them the undeclared and nonpartisans vote at low percentages compared to those who register with a party. Consequently, we Alaskans are cheated out of a senator, representative or governor who is best for Alaska. Don’t let your Alaska values be stomped on by Washington, D.C., think tanks. Vote and tell your friends to vote in 2020.
