On Jan. 27-30, the Anchorage School District Elementary Battle of the Books competition took place at West High. Encouraging reading and retention, this competition involves approximately 200 students per day answering questions about the 12 books they were asked to read.

On behalf of the competition coordinators, I would like to thank all of those students, judges, coaches, chaperones and coordinators who participated — about 450 per day! I would also like to thank the Glacier Lodge organization that provided the awards and copies of the Battle books to several schools that couldn’t have afforded the books otherwise. Thank you to West High for being generous hosts and to Great Harvest Bread Co. and Starbucks for your continued and invaluable support.

Important events such as these that focus on students’ academic aptitude can only be successfully delivered with the cooperation of everyone involved.
