Letter: Listen to the experts

The United States, Alaska and other states are now reaping the results of electing “leaders” who share a number of common traits: inexperience, incompetence, self-absorption and oversized egos. The most important trait that these politicians share is an ignorance of, or aversion to, facts, expertise and science.

While epidemiologists, scientists, doctors and established government experts universally plead for these “leaders” to protect the American people, these politicians are more interested in helping their reelections, their cronies and contributors. Although it will be a benefit to take steps to help the economy, backing off the most effective methods of protecting people will, in the end, cause much more damage to the economy, reduce confidence in our government and lessen these self-serving politician’s chances of holding onto power.

More important are the thousands of Americans who will needlessly die. Once it becomes obvious that Americans don’t share some special type of immunity, and are going to join the same exponential curve that other countries have experienced while in denial, it will be much too late to reverse course. This is obvious to anybody who has been following the world news.

The only ones who do not seem to be paying attention are these politicians, the most dangerous of whom has the ability to bring down the whole country, and the most local of whom is capable of doing the same to Alaska. Please! Listen to some experts for once. Every day counts.
