Letter: Missing a trail

It is outrageous the Windy Corner highway project would expand a two-lane road to four lanes and not include a multi-use trail. This section of the Seward highway is one of the most spectacular roads in North America, indeed in the whole world, and must be developed with all users in mind — walkers, bikers and other non-motorized users included.

Please think long-term; 100 years from now, Alaska will have an extensive multi-use trail system covering most of the road system and beyond. This project must be part of that long-term vision.

Just because a previous project was allowed to be poorly designed and did not include a multi-use trail is no reason to make yet another mistake. Multi-use trails are good for people, good for tourism, good for Alaskans' health and good for recreation. All major road upgrades must follow our long term visions as defined in the Statewide Active Transportation Plan, the Alaska Department of Transportation Long-Range Transportation Policy Plan and the Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions Plan.
