Bob Bell wrote that many Republicans lost their primary races because “... they were not representing the people in their districts.” If “representing” means that they did not want their representatives to work with Democrats in the Legislature but preferred the Donna Arduin budget, he is probably right. If “representing” means that they failed to secure “back dividends,” that must be true also.
This election cycle saw 31 challengers and incumbents sign a pledge to give out a “traditional” Permanent Fund dividend, along with four years of retroactive payments. What’s not to like about that? Free money! It worked for the governor and it is working again.
Another factor in the primary was involvement of the Washington, D.C. group Make Liberty Win.
As Pogo used to say, we have met the enemy and he is us.
