Letter: Rank hypocrisy

“The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.” — Mitch McConnell, 2016.

“President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” — Mitch McConnell, 2020.

What utter cynical hypocrisy! Does the voice of the American people no longer matter? What is at stake is not just the Supreme Court. What is at stake is America’s democracy, which rests precariously on our fraying collective faith that we all play by the same rules. Donald Trump should not choose our next Supreme Court justice unless the American people choose to reelect him. Thank you to Sen. Lisa Murkowski for recognizing this. I hope that Sen. Dan Sullivan — and all Alaskans — will also recognize it.
