Letters to the Editor

Letter: Education on race

I am a white male who has lived a privileged existence due to that fact. Yet I hear others call the “Black Lives Matter” movement stupid. They say, of course, “All Lives Matter.” They, however, miss the point.

So, over the last year, I have spent time researching the history of Blacks — and other people of color — in this country. Here are my sources: 15 hours of lectures titled “America’s long struggle against slavery” by professor Richard Bell, and the documentary “When Heritage Equals Hate: The Truth About the Confederacy in America.” From these, I saw the hate and depravity of white slave owners and their supporters.

In addition, I watched the movies “Just Mercy” and “The Hate U Give.” These movies show a more contemporary look at our racist culture. Finally, I offer a link to a short article appearing in a magazine called “The Week” (theweek.com/articles/939413/). If you have limited time, I suggest this reading.

I challenge any of you that disagree with or dismiss the Black Lives Matter movement to learn more about the history you speak of. Those who deride the movement aren’t stupid; many are just unaware. Offering an opinion without knowing the facts does not make you correct.
