Letter: Replace Sullivan

For the health of Alaskans, let’s replace Dan Sullivan with Dr. Al Gross as our junior U.S. senator. With the problems facing our nation and state, we need someone who has a spine for the next six years. Sullivan’s first term has shown him to be little more than be a doormat to whatever the soulless Republican Party of Donald Trump is peddling. He has been a yes-man for both Trump and McConnell; the resultant damage they together have heaped on this country will last decades.

It is likely that Sullivan will vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, a judge with little experience but the same financial dark-money backers who brought us Ohio Dan himself. Barrett is likely to continue to support disenfranchising voters in many struggling districts, as well as the improved health care access brought to millions by the Affordable Care Act.

While our senior senator occasionally expresses “concern,” Sullivan can’t even go that far. The best he has been able to muster, other than posing for photos, is to ‘sit in a corner and be quiet,’ as the backers of the Pebble Mine project say.

Dan Sullivan continues to appear without a mask and cannot socially distance in the midst of a pandemic that has thus far contributed to the deaths of nearly a quarter million Americans since last spring. These things show me that he doesn’t understand science and can’t buck his financial and political masters.

Help me replace him. Alaska deserves better.

Tina Tomsen, M.D.
