Letter: Vote yes on Ballot Measure 2

Like most Alaska voters, I’m neither Republican nor Democrat, although sometimes I change my voter registration in order to participate in Presidential caucuses. Ballot Measure 2 is designed to open primary elections to all voters, as well as shine a light on campaign contributions and ensure that elected officials are supported by a majority of voters.

Ballot Measure 2 opens Alaska primary elections. I fondly remember when voters in Alaska state primary elections received one ballot with all the candidates; voters were free to vote for anyone from any party. During the Alaska state primary election last August, I, like most Alaskans, had to choose from two ballots; neither had a full slate of candidates nor allowed me to choose my favored candidates in all the four legislative and congressional positions. Ballot Measure 2 proposes open nonpartisan primary elections that will give voters more choice and advance the top four candidates to the general election for governor, Legislature, and Congress.

I enthusiastically support Ballot Measure 2; it will reveal hidden political donations, ensure elected officials are supported by a majority of voters, and especially because it institutes open nonpartisan primary elections.
