Letter: Unfair renaming process

As I read the recent letter from Sandra Haldane, I found myself agreeing with her sentiments regarding the renaming of East High School. I, too, feel the entire process was a sham.

During the October University Area Community Council Meeting, Anchorage School District School Board member Margo Bellamy spoke about the renaming project. I informed her at the time that it was nothing against Bettye Davis, but that I did not wish my children’s high school name to be changed to anything.

I had read in the ADN article about this subject that a community-wide survey had been performed. I had never been part of any such survey, even though I live five minutes from East High School and am still at the same address and phone number as when our children graduated.

After speaking with Ms. Bellamy at the community council meeting, I wondered if a truly legitimate community survey would be performed before any board action was taken, and the next thing I knew there was a headline in the paper about how East High was given a new name! Yes, this whole process was quite the sham. I do hope ASD will rescind this action and, in the future, be more mindful of community input. Bettye Davis was a great lady. Adding her name to the ASD Educational Center would be most appropriate.
