Letter: Sullivan disappoints

Sen. Dan Sullivan apparently does need some instruction. His defiance of a simple solution — masks — demonstrates his lack of leadership. Centers for Disease Control studies show American Indian and Alaska Native persons appear to be disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; their findings suggest that the American Indian/Alaska Native population in 23 examined states, particularly American Indian/Alaska Native persons aged less than 65 years, has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thankfully, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium is working diligently to combat this statistic here in Alaska. However, Sen. Sullivan has shown total disregard let alone contempt for the most vulnerable people he is supposed to represent. His refusal to do the one most important thing, wearing a mask to help stop the spread, is an embarrassment. Just having a wife and daughters who are part Alaska Native is not an excuse for blatant disregard of the rest of the Alaska Native people. No matter how one feels about the coronavirus wearing a mask is not a sign of weakness but a sign of intelligence and strength in leadership.
