Letter: We need a mandate

Gov. Mike Dunleavy put out an emergency alert recently via a YouTube video. Apparently there is a pandemic going around; some people may not have heard. It was nice that the governor said some words, but he still refuses to implement a statewide mask mandate.

Instead, he just stated what we already know. The virus is spreading through our communities unchecked, resulting in sickness and deaths that otherwise would be prevented if people would just follow health guidelines. But many are not, and that is allowing the virus to spread. And that is putting a strain on our health care system and our health care workers.

It is time for real action from the governor. He needs to stop being a coward and step up and do what is needed to protect the health and well being of Alaskans. No more asking folks nicely to do the right thing. It is time for a mask mandate before it is too late and another lockdown is required.
