Letters to the Editor

Letter: Hypocrisy at its finest

Alaska’s three GOP Congressional representatives are celebrating “a proposed rule aimed at limiting large banks from pulling their financing from Arctic oil and gas projects,” put forth by the Treasury Department.

Sen. Dan Sullivan, silent on COVID-19 stimulus for individuals, is so excited about the rule that he made a special video about it for social media. Our Congressional delegation is nothing if not consistently critical of government ‘overreach’ (Rep. Don Young even has a “Government Overreach” tab on his website). Apparently, though, government regulations on private entities are fine when it benefits our delegation’s private interests.

And Sen. Lisa Murkowski has begun to tout climate change as a problem she is working to tackle. Yet she continues to champion Arctic oil and gas extraction, as if this won’t will further exacerbate climate adaptation and mitigation challenges in an Arctic that is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the country. The hypocrisy shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but sometimes I can’t believe it.
