In its recent editorial, the ADN editorial board wrote that “President Donald Trump and many members of Congress fomented the riots in our nation’s capital Wednesday through months of false claims and fearmongering that the election and its results were fraudulent.”Assuming the editorial board is striving for clarity, it should have instead said that “many Republican members of Congress” engaged in this big lie. The editorial board should also have said that the vast majority of the remaining Republican members of Congress meekly went along with this big lie (Sen. Dan Sullivan) or only offered belated tepid criticism (Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young).
The editorial board should also have pointed out that this disaster was the logical culmination of four years of debased pandering by Republicans to an individual whom even Sen. Ted Cruz once described as an “utterly amoral,” narcissistic “pathological liar.” If we are to fix our country’s dire situation, let’s put aside vague euphemisms and honestly identify the responsible parties.
