Letter: Insurrection

There is no excuse or pardon for insurrection or sedition or treason, least of all from the President of the United States.

On Jan. 7, I wrote the Alaska Congressional delegation, encouraging them to remove the President before he attempts to usurp power again. I have not heard from Sen. Lisa Murkowski or Rep. Don Young. From Sen. Dan Sullivan, I received a long, rambling email that explained that he followed the Constitution in counting the electoral college votes because, “in the past 32 years, successful Republican presidential candidates have won the popular vote only once, relying on the Electoral College for their victories.”

I am left to conclude that if Democrats relied on electoral votes to win, he would have voted to overturn the election. He defended his colleagues that objected to the electoral college, by stating, “Republican senators seeking to object to the Electoral College vote emphasized that they were taking such actions as a way to ‘raise the issue of election integrity.’ " Court after court in state after state, including the U.S. Supreme Court, did not find fraud or loss of integrity. This attempt by Sen. Sullivan is more of the doublespeak designed to support Donald Trump.

To those who rejected the 25th Amendment on incapacity or the 14th Amendment on insurrection or the move to impeach, I say that resigning is not enough. Our constitution, our democracy must be preserved. Put partisanship aside.
