Letter: Graduation restrictions

High school seniors all over Anchorage are preparing to graduate. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, but especially for young people. But things are starting to improve all over the state, especially with the high rate of vaccinations, with more than 430,000 doses administered to date.

Graduation ceremonies are scheduled outside at high school football stadiums. But still the Municipality of Anchorage is limiting attendance to this outside event to two guests per graduate. This is a heartbreaking and an unreasonable limitation especially considering the event is outside, the capacity of the stadiums are at least double this limited capacity, and well more than half the state will be vaccinated by mid-May. Our students have missed out on so much. Kids are suffering, families are suffering. It’s time to look at more reasonable options for the city and for graduation.

Anchorage Assembly members, please support the next generation of voters and leaders. Let our graduates celebrate this momentous occasion with their families and trust your school administrators to manage their graduation ceremonies appropriately.
