Letter: Seditious lies

Kenny Ziegahn’s recent letter “Truth matters” said it well: persistent belief in lies unsupported by evidence degrades democracy. Tyrants tell big lies to usurp power. Citizens and office holders who abet such liars by believing or pretending to believe big lies betray their country.

Legitimate authority is based on truth. When power depends on lies, that illegitimate power makes truth its enemy. If Americans can no longer tell the plain truth from naked lying, we are doomed. What makes America great is the promise of liberty and justice for all, of equal opportunity under the law, of fair and free elections respected by losers as well as winners. Bigotry and lying never made America great.
