Letter: Preserving democracy

I agree with West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin that, to increase political participation and preserve our democracy, Congress should eliminate partisan gerrymandering, require automatic voter registration and early voting, and make Election Day a federal holiday, while establishing a uniform nationwide voter ID requirement to verify — but not suppress — legitimate votes.

Similarly, I agree that — to foster a more functional government, while requiring bipartisanship — the filibuster should be reformed to allow delaying a vote only if 45 senators vote to continue debate, and then only if they actually continue talking, to explain their position to voters and try to persuade other senators.

It’s time we act to preserve our democracy and restore a functional government. Do you agree?
