Letter: Public health threat

I am one of those vaccinated “suckers” that COVID-19 denier Alex Berenson insulted at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference. His remarks, in which he rejoiced in the failure of the government to reach its vaccination goals, drew cheers from the conservative audience.

I feel nothing but contempt and disgust at him and those who cheered. We are still in the midst of the worst pandemic in more than 100 years, and extensive vaccination is the only long-term way out of this tragedy. Berenson and those cheerers insult the memory of the more than 600,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19. They showed an astonishing ignorance of the continuing public health (and economic) threat of COVID-19 and its evolution to an even more contagious variant that has created a new surge of infections and deaths in the U.S. almost exclusively in those who have not been vaccinated.
