Letter: Hunter supporting Chipman

I am an Alaska hunter and gun owner. I have hunted moose and caribou in the Arctic, in Interior Alaska, and deer and moose in the Southeast. At our hunting camp, we have specific rules about when weapons are loaded and unloaded, where we hunt, and how we hunt — we distance from each other by drainages.

I and my fellow hunters are simply aghast at the degree of gun carnage in our country every day, month, and year. That’s why I joined Moms Demand Action. To be involved you have to be a mom, have a mom, or used to have a mom — and be determined to do something about the gun carnage in America every day.

For example, I support David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) — the U.S. government agency responsible for enforcing our existing gun laws, including preventing illegal gun trafficking. Since 2015, there has not been a permanent ATF director, creating a void in leadership. Chipman would come in as a gun safety expert and 25-year veteran of ATF — he knows how to support ATF agents. He will ensure the laws already on the books are implemented, upheld, and enforced. Our nation needs a dedicated ATF director, and this highly qualified nominee — David Chipman — fits the bill.
