On July 19, the American Academy of Pediatrics updated its recommendations for opening schools in fall 2021. Their recommendations include requiring masks for everyone older than age 2, regardless of vaccination status.Anchorage School District should update its plan to reflect the AAP’s new recommendations. My 8-year-old son does not mind wearing a mask; he would rather be in-person with a mask than at home doing virtual school without one.

My fear is that without masks and with the rise of the delta variant, a much more contagious form of COVID-19, we will experience immediate large-scale outbreaks that will force the district back to online learning. Please, please don’t let this happen.

Prioritize in-person learning: Require masks for all.
