Letter: Anchorage deserves a real librarian

Anchorage deserves a real librarian, with library experience, who understands how to run Alaska’s largest library system. Once again, Mayor Dave Bronson has put forward a candidate, Judy Eledge, who has no education or experience in running a library, especially one as large as the Anchorage Public Library.

As this is his second time doing so, Mayor Bronson is clearly trying to politicize what should be an apolitical entity: public libraries. Back on May 21, 2002, during the leadership of Republican Mayor George Wuerch, the Anchorage Assembly resolved that APL should be run by a librarian with a master’s degree in library sciences and at least 4 years of experience running libraries. There is no reason to ignore that resolution. At minimum, we deserve someone who has sense enough to not write highly objectionable statements on social media. Libraries need to be run by librarians.
