Letter: Farewell, Clem Tillion

Many times my wife and I have taken friends from across the country and from Europe from Homer to Halibut Cove to see the incredible beauty of that place. Most memorable were the times when we encountered a smiling elderly man who always had a kind word and usually a great story to share, along with the beauty of the place he settled.

Mr. Clem Tillion told us of his service on Guadalcanal in World War II; of his coming to Halibut Cove and living in a dugout with a dirt roof, at least until he met his bride who deserved better than a beast living in a cave, according to her mother — his words, not mine! He told us of the building of his beautiful home and many other tales. Through all the stories, he shared his love of the land, his dear wife, his family and of Alaska.

When I think of what’s the best of Alaska, he comes to mind. Fond memories of his wit, cheerfulness and love of life are shared by people from across the world.

Thank you for your service to your country and your state, Mr. Tillion, well done. Rest well in the arms of your beloved wife. We will miss you.
