Letter: Hilcorp greenwashing

The Alaska Community Foundation has done some excellent work over the years. But its recent efforts to publicize Hilcorp’s philanthropy in Alaska deserves more attention. In its relatively brief tenure in Alaska, Hilcorp has amassed a disturbing array of spills and violations, leading the Alaska Oil & Gas Commission recently to recognize Hilcorp’s “substantial history of noncompliance.” Hilcorp also sought and recently received a permit to dump billions of gallons of toxic waste into Cook Inlet fisheries each year, when instead it could have invested in Alaska and Alaskans by properly treating its pollution.

Corporate philanthropy is vital to Alaska. But Hilcorp should not be allowed to greenwash its poor behavior.
