Letters to the Editor

Letter: COVID roulette

I just don’t get it. Many people in the Mat-Su are still very willing to play omicron roulette, be sick and miserable at home and out of work, and possibly sick enough to require a expensive hospitalization with possibly an ICU stay, time on a ventilator, death or “long COVID” health problems. All this to prove a point regarding individual freedom, and push back against federal or business mask and vaccine mandates. The antivaxxers and antimaskers have “drunk the Kool-Aid” of disinformation and conspiracy theories and have literally swallowed quack cures hook, line and sinker.

In the latest race to the bottom, a Mat-Su gubernatorial candidate vowed to remove Dr. Anne Zink from her position of supplying coherent and factual information and advice regarding avoidance and treatment of COVID. Also, aside from the obvious health and financial effects of being sick and out of work, why haven’t people made the connection between absenteeism due to illness and contact quarantines and the hits to the economy? This does not even begin to take into account the probability of a next, possibly more severe variant.

When you choose to not be vaccinated or wear a mask, my favorite Clint Eastwood quote comes to mind. “Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?”
