Letters to the Editor

Letter: A well-deserved thank you

For 39 years, members of the Gold Nugget Triathlon board of directors have made the GNT a rite of spring for so many Alaska women. It’s time to thank them for their time and devotion.

This all-volunteer group of women works year-round to plan and organize the event with the goal of improving the lives of women and girls through athletics. On race day, they oversee hundreds of volunteers and sponsors who give their time and talent to make the GNT a success.

Diane Barnett, an original and current member of the GNT board, and a participant in the race each year, has seen the race grow from a few to one of the largest all-women triathlons in the United States. World-class athletes and health-conscious participants, ranging in age from 10 to 80-plus, show up each spring to compete.

I’m one of the many thousands of women who have benefited from participating in the event.

Training for the Gold Nugget Triathlon with friends keeps me coming back each year. It’s easy to feel like a kid again when my friends call and ask if I’d like to come outside and play.
