Letter: Constitutional convention musings

In Don Canning’s recent opinion piece (ADN, Aug. 23), he asked, “If now isn’t the right time for a constitutional convention, when will it be?”It’s nice to see that the political landscape in Two Rivers allows Mr. Canning to imagine a convention and a process that is so special that it brings out the best in every delegate. A process so special that it “makes bigger things possible.”

Here in the Mat-Su, a world away from Two Rivers, we just finished a primary voting process that ranked a (last name of) Kelley as the fourth-place vote getter with 3,500 votes. Now we have to suffer speculation from the second-place vote-getter (first name Kelly) that those 3,500 votes for the fourth-place Kelley were really meant for her due to voter confusion. Really?

Here’s my answer to Mr. Canning’s question of when a constitutional convention might be appropriate: with the next generation. I hope they will show themselves to be more thoughtful, more engaged and less willing to be affected by passing fancy and partisan narrow-mindedness than this current crop of Alaska politicians, influencers and voters. I remain optimistic for our future, just not where we find ourselves today.
