Letters to the Editor

Letter: How do you choose a president?

In the upcoming election, I think that more than policy, promises and political party the following basic questions are critical. Is the person honest and committed to statements and policies based on facts? Does the candidate follow the rule of law and abide by the Constitution? Does the individual show common respect and concern for all Americans?

For me, these criteria rise to the top of consideration because they are the basis to determine if the individual will operate within the ethical and legal framework of a democratic society. Without honesty there can be no basis to trust the candidate or believe what they say. Without adherence to the rule of law, we lose the legal compass that guides and protects our society from anarchy. Common respect for the rights of all Americans is the moral glue that holds us together and allows us to enjoy our individuality in a diverse society. Common respect is based on honoring the value of diversity and respecting the laws that protect it.

Fact-based decisions, respect for the rule of law and the rights of our fellow citizens are key to our survival as a democracy, and I want the person we elect to embrace and protect these principles.
