5-year-old killed by falling rock during family hike near Valdez

A boulder fell from a ledge near Worthington Glacier on Wednesday morning and fatally struck a 5-year-old hiker, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Valdez police received a report at about 9:25 a.m. of the "bowling ball sized" rock striking the boy, who had been hiking with family members and friends near Mile 29 of the Richardson Highway.

The boy was struck in the head, troopers said.

"Lifesaving measures were taken on scene by family members, bystanders and EMS while waiting for air transportation," troopers said in an alert late Wednesday.
