Valdez man dies when kayak flips on Tonsina River

A Valdez man died Monday when his kayak flipped on the Tonsina River, Alaska State Troopers said.

Around 1:30 p.m., troopers were called to the area, which was about 2 miles downriver from the Tonsina River Lodge near Mile 79 of the Richardson Highway, said Austin McDaniel, a spokesman for the troopers.

Reese Doyle, 36, had been underwater for about 10 minutes before members of the group he was kayaking with were able to recover him, troopers wrote in an online statement.

“The group attempted lifesaving efforts for approximately 45 minutes without success,” troopers wrote.

Troopers used a helicopter to transport Doyle’s body, the statement said.
