When it comes to "adventures in highly irregular locales" Alaska seems like a natural. But what may seem odd to some is the combination of Alaska and surfing.

In CNN Travel's latest adventure feature, Surfing AK nabs the No. 2 spot on the "highly irregular" list of activities. And just in case you needed a reason to believe your previous adventures were subpar, the piece starts out with a helpful reminder:

Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, snowboarding in Aspen, bicycling in the Alps, safari in Tanzania. Yawn. Millions have been there, done that. To some people, alternative actually means alternative. That's what makes this collection of activities in offbeat locales weird. And special. But mostly weird.

It goes on to Alaska:

When we think surfing, we think warm weather and sandy beaches. Not so for the folks from Homer-based Ocean Swell Ventures, who will take you out on a 50-year-old fishing boat to surf the frigid waves and tidal bores of the Gulf of Alaska.

Last year, Eric and John Jackson, the blood-relative team behind the Red Bull TV series "Brothers on the Run," began their adventures in Alaska. In the episode featured above, the Jackson brothers and friends rip it up outside of Homer at an undisclosed secret surf spot. Around 4:20 in the clip, one of the brothers can be heard saying, "There's nowhere else I'd rather be right now. This is insane. I couldn't believe it, I kept saying it over and over out there in the water. I can't believe where we are. You're looking at just the most insane mountains surrounding you and you're just in this ocean valley with perfect peelers coming in."

That, for most, pretty much sums up the experience of surfing in Alaska.
