WASHINGTON — Get ready for the outside ads to start: A right-leaning nonprofit, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, has announced plans for two statewide radio ad buys supporting Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
The group supports Republicans exclusively and says its focus is on bolstering candidates that acknowledge climate change and support production of "clean" renewable energy. The organization is a "501(c)4" nonprofit, which means it is not required to disclose its funding sources.
The group says it supports conservatives and "free market" energy solutions, but has faced questions in the past about ties to groups that support liberal causes.
The pro-Murkowski radio ad released by the group touts a need for "energy independence" and cite's Murkowski's efforts to pass a bipartisan energy bill. The bill is currently awaiting passage through a House-Senate conference committee.
The radio advertisement also notes Murkowski's interest in a wide range of energy sources, including hydropower, solar geothermal and biomass.
Citizens for responsible Energy Solutions said it plans to spend $110,000 on the radio ads in the state. The Federal Election Commission has not yet reported any outside spending in this year's U.S. Senate race.
