Mayor of Alaska's largest city sworn in while vacationing in Hawaii

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, who was elected to a second term of Alaska's largest city in April, will be sworn into office Monday as he vacations in Hawaii.

Yes, in Hawaii, a few thousand miles away from the Last Frontier.

First Lady Lynnette has family in Hawaii, and they travel there every summer, a mayor spokesperson told media. To accommodate the ceremony, Honolulu lawyer Nathan Aipa will provide a live video link.

According to Hawaii News Now, Anchorage District Court Judge Brian Clark will administer the oath online from Anchorage City Hall.

Alaskans take great pride in their homeland, which makes one wonder why Sullivan hadn't planned his vacation around the ceremony, rather than taking the oath on some faraway island.

Former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin probably wouldn't have done the same.

As you may recall, she was on the verge of giving birth to her son Trig in spring 2008 while at a conference in Texas. Rather than going to a hospital in Texas, she got on a plane and flew to Seattle. Then continued on a jet to Anchorage. And then Palin drove some 40 minutes to a hospital in the Mat-Su Valley -- her homeland -- to give birth to Trig.

Why did she go to such extremes?

Her husband Todd Palin summed it up at the time: "You can't have a fish picker from Texas."

As for Sullivan, the location of where he takes the oath of office for his second term as mayor apparently doesn't matter much. He'll return to lead his city when his family vacation is over.
