Yukon-Kuskokwim tribes say special convention moved to April 5 and 6

BETHEL – A special convention called by tribes served by the Alaska Native nonprofit group for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta has been re-set for April 5 and 6.

The Association of Village Council Presidents has questioned whether enough tribes have come forward to authorize the meeting. Tribal leaders arranging it say their authority is rooted in a resolution for a February convention that was approved in October. The February meeting didn't happen. The AVCP executive board set a convention for June 8 and 9 but the activists said that is during a busy fishing time.

A location in Bethel for the April session is still being finalized, said Mike Williams of the Kuskokwim River village of Akiak.

The meeting initially was set for Tuesday and Wednesday, but Williams said the later dates were more convenient.
