The most famous Mexican restaurant above the Arctic Circle caught fire in the early morning Saturday. Despite North Slope Borough firefighters battling the blaze for hours, little is left of Pepe's North of the Border restaurant, owned by Fran Tate, in Barrow, Alaska.

The building and all its contents were consumed in the blaze. Crews managed to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent structures, and no one was injured. The embers are wet and cold, but the cause is still being investigated. And the potent mixture of shock and loss is still sharp as smoke among those familiar with Tate and Pepe's.
