Photos: Bean's Cafe grapples with Spice use

Since mid-summer, medical emergencies stemming from suspected use of the drug have increased drastically in Anchorage, and as winter approaches there seems to be little relief for the city.

From July 18 to Sept. 27, suspected Spice use comprised 10 percent of all Anchorage Fire Department emergency transports, according to data provided by Erich Scheunemann, assistant chief of emergency medical service operations. Three-quarters of the calls come from downtown.

"Anecdotally, we see much more Spice now than meth and heroin combined," Scheunemann said.
