A freshman runner from Monroe Catholic High School died Saturday, a day after he collapsed at the finish line at the end of the 3,200-meter race at the Region VI track and field championships in Fairbanks.

Joseph Balko was flown to Anchorage late Friday and died at Providence Alaska Medical Center next day, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

His death was announced during the track meet's awards ceremony Saturday afternoon at West Valley High School. Teammates learned of his passing before the announcement, the News-Miner said.
