Kodiak’s Trevor Dunbar 7th in 5,000 meters at U.S. nationals

Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar finished seventh Friday night in the 5,000 meters at the USA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships in Sacramento, California, where former Eielson High star Janay DeLoach earlier advanced in her 100-meter hurdle heat.

Dunbar, 26, clocked 13 minutes, 30.89 seconds on a hot evening to come close to his personal record (13:26.27) on the track for 3.1 miles. He ran that PR earlier this month at the Portland Track Festival in Oregon.

Dunbar, who was an All-America at the University of Oregon, lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado. He is the only Alaskan to run a sub-four-minute mile and earlier this season lowered his PR at that iconic distance to 3:55.54 at race near Boston.

DeLoach, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in the long jump, finished third in her first-round heat of the 100-meter hurdles in 13.03 seconds. That time was 11th among the 16 qualifiers for Saturday's semifinals. DeLoach, 31, lives and trains in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Ketchikan steeplechaser Isaac Updike was also scheduled to run at nationals in Sacramento but did not compete because of injury. Updike fell negotiating the water jump at the Portland Track Festival and suffered a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He said it appears he will be able to avoid surgery by undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Updike, 25, who lives and trains in Eugene, Oregon, last summer finished 12th at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The U.S. national meet is a qualifier for the world championships later this summer in London.
