A group of girls ages 8 to 18 spent Thursday afternoon at the Alaska Rock Gym, climbing rock walls and meeting a couple of rock stars from the sports world.

The event was part of Fast and Female, an international group organized in 2009 that holds events annually in Anchorage. Among the athletes leading the group were four-time Olympic skier Kikkan Randall of Anchorage, national champion skier Becca Rorabaugh of Fairbanks and professional rock climber Chelsea Rude of Boulder, Colorado.

Randall said the aim is to provide instruction and inspiration.

"We want to show them that a life in sports is a great way to be strong and chase your dreams (and) to meet a great social group," she said. "Here at Fast and Female, they get to meet their heroes and see how much fun it is to stay involved in sports.

"… We hope it's a circle of inspiration, so the girls that are participants today will be the ambassadors for the next generation."
