Craig, Su Valley open strong at Class 2A state volleyball tournament

Craig won a battle between two former state champions on its way to a Friday night semifinal match in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament at Dimond High.

The Panthers, the 2016 state champs, defeated Cordova, the 2015 state champions, in a four-set winners bracket match Thursday.

That puts Craig in Friday’s 6:45 p.m. winners bracket semifinal match against Su Valley. Su Valley advanced by surviving a first-set loss to Wrangell to win in four sets. The winner of the Craig-Su Valley match advances to Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship match.

There is no defending champion in the tournament — 2017 winner Petersburg failed to qualify.

The Class 2A tournament is one of two happening this week at Dimond High. The other is the Mix Six state tournament, a coed event for Alaska’s smallest schools.

A dozen Mix Six teams competed in pool play on Thursday, with the top eight teams moving into bracket play that begins at 9 a.m. Friday. Check asaa.org for pairings.
