Three Alaska biathletes are headed to Slovakia, where they will compete in the Youth/Junior World Championships.

Helen Wilson and Maja Lapkass are among seven women and Maxime Germain is one of eight men who qualified for the U.S. team that will compete in the championships, which are for biathletes 20 years and younger.

Competition begins Jan. 27 in Osrblie, Slovakia.

This is the third time Wilson has made the team and the second time Germain has made it.

All three earned their spots at a race series late last month at Utah’s Soldier Hollow. Wilson finished no lower than seventh in three races at Soldier Hollow, with her best result a fourth-place finish in the 6-kilometer sprint race.

Lapkass was disqualified in her first race but came back strong with a pair of second-place finishes.

Germain opened with a 12th-place finish in a 10-kilometer sprint race but rocketed to second place in the 10K pursuit and followed that with a second-placing showing in a second 10K sprint.
